The Raffles doorman is the most photographed person in Singapore. He told me himself. He also told me that he lived briefly in Manhattan and worked as a doorman at the Drake Hotel. He returned to Singapore, because it was too expensive in New York.

From the 26th floor of the Carlton Hotel in Singapore, I looked directly down at Raffles, the world famous colonial-style hotel. Raffles claim to fame is the Singapore Sling, invented in 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon. At the Long bar, where the sweet concoction is served, you will find yourself ensconced in surroundings from a bygone era. It’s also an escape from the hectic pace of the city. This is the same bar where Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling, Noel Coward and other writers downed the famous drink. Ingredients: gin, cherry brandy, sugar, lemon juice, bitterslinks, and topped off with a Maraschino cherry.

The Merlion is a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name comes from a portmanteau of mermaid and lion. The Merlion was designed by Mr Fraser Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (now known as the Singapore Tourism Board (STB)) from 26 March 1964 to 1997. The Merlion continues to be its trademark symbol since 20 July 1966. Although STB has changed their logo in 1997, the STB Act continues to protect the Merlion symbol. Approval must be received from STB before it can be used. The Merlion appears frequently in STB-approved souvenirs.

Based on the Singapore Tourism Board’s publicity campaign, the lion head and fish body of the creature recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on an island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore.

It has been a long wait for the city state which last made the podium at the 1960 Rome Olympics when weightlifter Tan Howe Liang won silver - their only previous medal.

"We will get a silver at least. I’m extremely satisfied and give my team full marks," said Singaporean coach Liu Guodong after their hard-fought 3-2 victory over South Korea.

"I feel that our mission has been accomplished because I treated today’s match as a final.

"Having worked as a coach in Singapore for two years, I’m very happy to have helped the country end its 48-year medal drought." Feng Tianwei was the heroine.
